NPP MPs Declare ‘No Confidence in Finance Minister’, Demand His Removal from Office.

Aggrieved NPP MPs

Accra, Ghana (GS) Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of parliament have expressed displeasure at the deteriorating economic conditions in the country and have called for the immediate dismissal of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofor-Atta, and a Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

In an unprecedented revolt against their own political party and government, the NPP MPs have also threatened to boycott all bills and budgets presented to parliament for approval by the Presidency if their demands are not fulfilled within a reasonable period.

According to the NPP MPs, they have utilized all available communication channels to convey their concerns to President Akufo-Addo about the untenable economic policies being prosecuted by Finance Minister Ofori-Atta and his team. However, all their concerns about the poor management of the economy have fallen on deaf ears.

When Ghana’s Parliament resumed sitting today October 25, 2022, the NPP majority caucus summoned its members to a hurriedly-organized news conference which was addressed by the Honorable Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, MP for Asante-Akim North.

The NPP MPs disclosed that they have made their concerns clear to the Presidency through the leadership in parliament and top-level officials of the Party but they are yet to receive any positive feedback.

Finance Minister of Ghana, Ken Ofori-Atta

“We want to use this platform to communicate our strong desire that the President removes the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, without further delay to restore confidence in the financial sector and reverse the downward trend in economic growth”, the group’s spokesman, Hon. Appiah-Kubi intimated.

The NPP MPs claim they have had to defend allegations of conflict of interest, lack of confidence, and trust against the leadership of the Finance Ministry.

“Recent developments within our economy are of great concern to members of the majority caucus and our constituents. We want to serve notice that until such persons (Ofori-Atta and Adu Boahen) are made to resign or removed from office, members of the NPP majority caucus will not participate in any business of government by or for the President by any other minister”.
