The Government of Ghana says it will terminate cellular services to cellphone subscribers in the country who have not registered their Subscriber Identity Cards (SIM cards) beginning September 30, 2022. However, puninitve measures for data services will kick in on Wednesday September 7.
Some sunscribers will begin to experience gradual restrictions on some of their wireless phone service features immediately. Outgoing calls will be re-routed to an Interactive Voice Recording (IVR) for a SIM card registration sensitization message to be played before all calls are connected.
In a statement, Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA), the agency that oversees cellphone service operations in the country, warned that outgoing calls and data services will be blocked for unregistered SIM card owners for 48 hours on a weekly basis until the end of September.
Accra, Ghana (GS) The NCA made it clear that subscribers who have not completed their SIM card registration process and those who have linked their Ghana Cards to their SIM cards via the *404# access number but have not proceeded to have their biodata captured will also face similar disruption in service beginning tomorrow.
At the end of September, all unregistered SIM cards will be completely deactivated from all cellphone services in Ghana. Subscribers will be given a six month grace period to register to redeem their SIM cards, whilst those who fail to comply with new policy will have their SIM cards re-assigned to the pool to be sold to potential new subscribers.
The Authority explained that Mobile Network Operarors (MNOs) are still continuing the SIM card registration process at their customer care centers and through agents that have been deployed across the country.
